I have a great admiration for Miller's writing, but at the same time I am often left with the sense that his books are more of a writing exercise, to show what he can do - and perhaps more to the point, what he can get away with, how far he can push the establishment. I always imagine that he took a great deal of satisfaction from his work being banned in many countries, as though he'd proved himself Outside and unconstrained.
