'Alternative' (though not fake!) news has been distributed via underground press as sheets, pamphlets and then zines since the development of the printing press made it viable. I'm thinking of English History now and the way ideas and plans were shared by groups during a variety of rebellions and uprisings (the Civil War, the 'Diggers' etc etc.).

But I didn't know about the Soviet Samizdat - and I do love to learn! :D
