Graham Greene wrote some startlingly good stories. He was (I think) exceptionally good at tackling big concepts within more focused narratives about everyday people and/or specific relationships (as with your example of 'Brighton Rock').

I think my favourites are probably 'The Power and the Glory' and 'The End of the Affair'.
