Hi Tom, thanks for this interesting essay.

I always rather imagined that the concept of females acting was also avoided at that time because, having a women on stage who might possibly be seen as more beautiful (and might be more admired) than the Queen herself, would quite likely risk ringing a death knell for acting troop, playwright and actress alike. Elizabeth was formidable, but rather needy too.
