I see what you're getting at, for sure. I think it's happened with literary villains for a long time though hasn't it. The best villains will always be written with something we relate to in their background or character, and/or a skill level/intelligence we can admire, it makes for delicious nuance in the reactions of their audiences, a closer emotional connection...as you say.
