I also think parts of your story sound very typical of British culture. Not to minimise your childhood experience one iota, but certain aspects seem so very familiar. I've seen family situations so like that so many times round here.

It's tragic, I'm sorry you had to go through all that as a child - and that some of it is ongoing.
