Taking a stab at snswering this question: through a good deal of zooming in to look more closely, I want to say that this figure — blindfolded in a gloomy indistinct painting — nevertheless has a look of wonder on his face. I feel that it is possible for him to be seeing (in his mind’s eye) scenes of much greater colour and joy than the one he himself is part of, because even without sight, he has imagination and creativity to draw upon. If he is not blind, or has not always been that way, he also has memory to fall back upon, cheerful thoughts of things encountered when young which amazed and entertained.
