Thought provoking piece Anthony, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us at Counter Arts.
Is it Jimmy Kimmel who does the Halloween candy 'pranks' year in, year out? (I ask because as I'm in the UK and not a watcher of any of their various shows, I have on occasion confused my Jimmy's, if you see what I mean...)
I've always thought that to be incredibly cruel, not at all funny and indicative of an entirely egocentric personality. He's concerned with what he finds funny and the attention and kudos it will bring to him from like-minded individuals, of which there are obviously and unfortunately plenty - not the effect his 'pranks' and 'skits' have on his victims.
As you say, a white man in particular (but to lesser extents anyone other than a black woman), would probably be fine with just telling him to get the hell up and out of their space. A black woman has to think twice, about how people will respond if she does that, and chose dignity in forging forward as best she could.
Even now, in discussing his behaviour, we're continuing to give the idiot white man our attention aren't we.
I don't know her show, but Quinta Brunson won this award, so it's her name which deserves to be heard, not his.
That said, there's a cynical little voice in my brain saying that if they are friends, this little stunt has managed to have that part of the ceremony publicised rather a lot. That's a win and who's to say they didn't cook it up together with exactly that aim in mind?
I do feel it was disrespectful, with racist and misogynistic undertones, typical Kimmel. Yet I wouldn't rule out that being intentional, to garner attention.
I'm not a fan of the fact these heinous actions are utilised these days as hooks for things like advertising and publicity, but it happens. It seems that anything is fair game in the Art of Celebrity.
